NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY

QUESTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

Two questions are supplied for each study - one doctrinal in nature, the other practical.

Study 01: The Romans

1. How did the organisation of the Roman Empire assist Christian mission?
2. What can we learn from the teaching on slavery in the NT? See also Study 15.

Study 02: The Greeks

1. Discover how St.Aquinas used Aristotle in his arguments for the existence of God.
2. Hedonism teaches pleasure is the highest good. Is the doctrine alive today?

Study 03: The Jews

1. What significance does the Jewish temple have for NT studies?
2. Consider the importance Judaism placed on the home. What can we learn from this?

Study 04: The Jews

1. Compare the beliefs of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
2. Jesus did not condemn the Pharisees outright. Evaluate this statement.

Study 05: The Gospel of Matthew

1. "Matthew is the Gospel of the King." Criticise the adequacy of this statement.
2. The Lord's teaching on divorce and children are together in Mt.19:1ff. Is this significant?

Study 06: The Gospel of Mark

1. Study the portrayal of Jesus as the Servant of the Lord. Mk.10:45 is an important verse.
2. What lessons and challenges confront the Christian in Mk.16:14-20?

Study 07: The Gospel of Luke

1. Evaluate the significance of M.C.Tenney's comments on Lk.1:1-4.
2. What practical lessons can we learn from the Gospel on discipleship?

Study 08: The Gospel of John

1. Demonstrate how the Fourth Gospel represents the deity and humanity of Jesus.
2. Study how Jesus related to people. John is the best textbook on friendship evangelism.

Study 09: The Acts of the Apostles

1. Study the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Acts.
2. Paul made use of his Roman citizenship. Should a Christian maintain their rights?

Study 10: The Epistle of James

1. Compare the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount with that found in James.
2. James warns us about the wrong use of the tongue. How can we apply his teaching?

Study 11: The Epistle to the Galatians

1. Galatians is concerned with the corruption of the gospel. Is it being corrupted today?
2. Paul's Christian commitment is seen in Gal.2:20 & 14. How can we measure ours?

Study 12: The Thessalonian Epistles

1. Study the teaching in the two epistles on the second coming of the Lord Jesus.
2. Do the epistles contain a work ethic? Consider Paul's life-style and teaching.

Study 13: The Corinthian Epistles

1. Study the ministry of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit in 1 Cor.12,13 & 14.
2. Litigation is part of today's world. What does Paul teach on Christians and lawsuits?

Study 14: The Epistle to the Romans

1. Consider how Romans uses the courtroom analogy. Begin with the word 'justification'.
2. Apply the teaching on the person and work of the Spirit in Romans (e.g., Rom.8).

Study 15: Two Prison Epistles

1. Demonstrate how the universal church is a major subject in Ephesians.
2. Chose texts from Colossians which should inspire Christian living (e.g., Col.3:17).

Study 16: Philippians

1. Study the Christology of the Christ-hymn (Carmen Christi) in Phil.2:6-11.
2. Study the subject of local church unity and its importance in the light of the NT.

Study 17: The Pastoral Epistles

1. Construct a Bible study on Timothy, Paul's convert and co-worker.
2. What can we learn about church leadership and Christian responsibility from the letters?

Study 18: The First Epistle of Peter

1. Consider the example of the Lord Jesus in 1 Peter.
2. Apply Peter's 'concerned injunctions' beginning with "Be self-controlled" (1 Pet.1:13).

Study 19: The Epistle to the Hebrews

1. What does the epistle teach about the supremacy of Christ?
2. How can we apply the "Let us..." exhortations found in Hebrews?

Study 20: The Epistles of 2 Peter and Jude

1. Research on the 'love-feasts' (2 Pet.2:13 & Jude 12). Cf., Acts 2:46 & 1 Cor.10:14 - 11:34.
2. Consider the call to perseverance and the doxology in Jude 17-25.

Study 21: The Epistles of John

1. Study the doctrinal purpose of 1 John (1 Jn.5:13). 'Know' and 'assurance' are key words.
2. John is known as 'the apostle of love'. What does he teach about love in his epistles?

Study 22: The Book of Revelation

1. Does M.C.Tenney's outline of the Revelation give a good summary of the book?
2. How can the Apocalypse strengthen a Christian or the church facing persecution?

Study 23: The Text of the New Testament

1. Consider the providence of God in the preservation of Scripture (OT and NT).
2. The Jewish and early Christian church had public Bible reading plans. Your church?

Study 24: The Canon of the New Testament

1. How (and why) did the church rejected works such as the Gospel of Judas?
2. William Tyndale gave his life for the Scriptures. What can we learn from his story?
